OMG- I love the Ibex!

Okay, I do have a few problems with it still. Mostly the fact that Active Directory browsing support is still frelled, and has been since Hardy, but still…

I just deleted my xorg.conf file and rebooted. Normally this would be akin to computer suicide. Not only did it boot- but it autodetected my video settings properly and brought me right back into my desktop like nothing happened. Except for a brief flash to the console while “hald” was loading (which is now apparently super-charged!)- it went flawlessly.

As someone who has spent countless hours trying to tweak xorg.conf, either to get a driver working or to just get Ubuntu to boot, this is simply amazing. I usually go through hell on every major Ubuntu update because of my older ATI video card and it’s proprietary and/or sort-of-working FGLRX drivers. Apparently that will no longer be the case (fingers crossed).

As an added bonus- my four-button trackball now works 100%. There have been some hacks in the past to get the extra buttons to work, but now- it JUST WORKS. This is another big step forward for Ubuntu and desktop Linux.
