ICANN: TLDs could end with EXE. Confused? Users may be too

There are several articles out related to ICANN’s recent vote to open up the TLD process to anyone that wants to manage one. We may soon (next Spring) have TLDs like .media, .porn, .video, and yes- .exe.

I think worrying about users confusing domain names with application names is a bit ridiculous though, given that .COM was an application extension since the early days of PC operating systems, and is still used by Windows PCs today. I suppose this is a good place to note too that such file extensions are completely meaningless to every other Non-Microsoft operating system. The DNS system itself isn’t going to confuse them, nor will any modern Web server- so I really don’t see how this will be a problem. File names don’t end with a forward slash (/) either, and as far as I know- you can’t enter an executable file name in the address bar of any browser and have it execute.

User’s WILL be confused, because they will be freaked-out by any Web address that doesn’t end in .COM, .NET, or .ORG (in North America) or their country’s TLDs, like .CO.UK. It will definitely take awhile to get used to.

I’d love to buy a TLD like: .witch or .wolf

(I don’t have $500k, and doubt it could be monetized to justify a loan though.)
