Ubuntu npviewer problems…

One of those “Just posting this in case it helps someone…” posts.

I’ve had nothing but problems in the last month with the 64-bit Firefox npwrapper (npviewer) plug-in. This is the plug-in that allows the 32-bit version of Flash Player run in 64-bit Firefox. It was locking up all the time and eating CPU cycles for lunch. (DAMN YOU ADOBE- it’s been over two f*cking years and you still can’t crap out a 64-bit version of Flash Player?!)

But I digress…

For some reason, Automatix (the best way to install it) wasn’t installing the newest version of the npwrapper plug-in for Firefox, and wouldn’t uninstall the current plug-in, even though it said it was and Firefox wasn’t running at the time. The fix- just manually delete it:

sudo rm /usr/lib/firefox/plugins/npwrapper.libflashplayer.so

If you are still having problems- try deleting the npviewer files themselves (after “uninstalling” using Automatix):

Then- re-install.

So far, this has “fixed” the problems I’ve been having, although I’ve only been playing around with it for a couple of hours. I had been getting really sick of having to kill Firefox and npviewer every ten minutes, especially if I went to a Flash-laden site. Usually a few minutes on YouTube was enough to kill it.

One reason my setup may have been borked- and a cautionary tale: Don’t under any circumstances install Gnash! Nothing against the project- they have accomplished a lot and I applaud their efforts, but- it just doesn’t work right now, and I’m pretty sure giving it a try is what messed up things for me.
