HD DVD Really Dead Now: Paramount Following Warner to Blu-ray-Only Party

Still only a rumor at this point, but it is probably inevitable. I have a new-found hatred for Warner Bros right now after they dropped HD-DVD yesterday.

I’m pissed not only because I bought into HD-DVD last November, and have already purchased all of the HD-DVD titles I actually want, but because Blu-Ray players are still outrageously expensive. I refuse to pay $500 for a Blu-Ray player, and don’t want a damn PS3 (or anything else from Sony, ever again).

The good news is- I can enjoy the HD-DVD movies I have, and if the format is abandoned- there will be lots of bargains to be had. My old-fashioned SD DVDs look fantastic on my “old” upscaling DVD player and on the HD DVD player anyway, and by the time the HD-DVD player burns out- maybe Blu-Ray will be reasonably priced.

Some people are applauding what seems to be the end of this format war. The problem is the competition between the two formats has driven the prices of the movies and the players down considerably over the past year. Without that competition- what happens to the prices?(!)
